For every kilowatt-hour (kWh) your system sends to the grid, you earn a credit for one kilowatt-hour.

In November, Dominion calculates your credit balance value. Recent values have been about 2.8¢ to 3.4¢ per kWh.

Dominion Net Metering FAQ
What is net metering?
It is the billing arrangement where the extra power your panels send to the grid earns you a credit that offsets power you pull back later, one for one during the year.
Do credits roll over to the next year?
Banked credits are settled at the annual November true-up and do not carry into the next year, so a big permanent surplus has limited value.
When does the true-up happen?
Once a year, in November. Dominion totals your banked credits and applies any remaining balance to your bill at the avoided-cost rate.
How much is my credit worth?
During the year, credits offset usage at the retail rate one to one. At the November true-up, leftover credit settles at roughly 2.8–3.4¢ per kWh (last reviewed 2026-08-05).
Do I need a special meter?
Dominion installs a bi-directional meter that measures power in both directions. We coordinate the interconnection paperwork for you.
Are there fees or minimums?
Utility terms include standard service charges and can change. We review Dominion's current rider with you so there are no surprises.
Can I add a battery to my system?
Yes. A battery lets you store your own surplus instead of banking it for a low true-up rate, and keeps essential loads on during outages.
